Student Review

Going into this rotation, I knew that it was going to be mostly low vision patients, but I also didn't realize that we got to see ABI/TBI patients as well!! If you are at all interested in low vision, BY ALL MEANS YOU MUST GO TO THIS ROTATION!!! It truly made me fall in love with low vision all over again! Because it is a VA, you get the chance to demonstrate and fit multiple different devices that you may not get the chance to fit at a private practice/non-VA setting.  I feel so much more comfortable now fitting spec mounted scopes, monocular telescopes, hand held mags, CCTVs, high powered reading glasses, doing trial frame refractions and so much more.
In addition, they have the Eastern Blind Rehab Center which is an in-patient clinic for low vision patients.  Unfortunately due to COVID, there weren't any in-patients for me to see, but their whole program sounds amazing! At the EBRC, low vision patients stay at the EBRC in the VA hospital for multiple weeks and are working on ADLs, mobility, and low vision device training.  It truly sounds like a wonderful experience to be able to see your patient grow and really learn how life can still be lived even with low vision/blindness over the course of a few months!!  Because this site also has an ABI clinic, you do a lot of adult BV workups which is also great! I was really nervous about BV workups and prescribing prism for patients, but after this rotation, I am so much more confident in these skills!  Overall, even if you aren't interested in low vision, I truly can't recommend this site enough!! The attendings are all phenomenal and it was a wonderful and friendly environment to work in.  You get to learn SO MUCH!!  I loved it so much that I am even considering it for residency!! Again, this was an absolutely wonderful rotation to have and I truly can't recommend it enough!
