Description

VisionPoint Eye Center is a new practice created from the merging of 4 well-established eye care practices in Bloomington-Normal Illinois. We have 9 Optometrists and 3 General Ophthalmologists who together see 250 patients per day. Our highest volume is primary care, but we see a high volume of ocular disease and have a corneal specialist. We also do specialty contacts. We built a 28,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility to house our new clinic, eyewear boutique and have a billing department on site. In addition to comprehensive eye health exams and ocular disease treatment, we also do LASIK and minor surgeries on site.

Amtrak can provide transportation here and home. The station is a beautiful hub in the middle of Uptown Normal, just 3.5 miles from VisionPoint. https://www.normal.org/1102/Uptown-Station. With ISU located here, many students use it too.

Learning Objectives:

1) To be real-world, private practice ready - both as a clinician and as a business person.

2) Allow the students to see a wide range of patients and learn how to manage their time, staff, and other resources to be profitable.

3) Learn how ODs and MDs can work together and benefit each other in this ever changing optometric world.

Miscellaneous comments:

The amount and type of patients the student will see vary greatly depending on their skill set or areas we feel the need to work on as well as the student's desire.

The student's day will vary. One day they will be in the urgent care clinic. They will see the patients, determine the diagnosis and present to attending staff. One to one and half days, the student will rotate between observing cataract surgery, minor surgeries and billing practice management. One day will be in optical. The remaining time will be with direct patient care.

Student Review

I know that a lot of students chose sites because of the location and central Illinois in the middle of an corn field doesn’t particularly make people want to pick this site as one of their first choices.  However, I CANNOT stress enough HOW AMAZING this externship was!!! I saw SO many patients with so many different diseases and GREATLY increased my confidence and clinical skills!!! All of the attending s were absolutely phenomenal and I even got to shadow the OMD’s for cataract surgeries, blepharoplasties, and LASIK!!! It was an absolutely wonderful experience. I also had the opportunity to see SO many patients all the way from simple to complex, from young (9 months old) to old (90-100 years old). There are even more opportunities for you to participate in fitting scleral lenses, GPs, regular soft contact lenses, hybrids, etc. if you so choose.  It is a very ‘all in one’ site with primary care, ocular disease, pediatrics, urgent care, and ophthalmology. I seriously cannot recommend this site enough!!!
