Other Comments:
Students should be highly motivated and prepared for a demanding clinical rotation. There is a significant emphasis on the diagnosis and management of ocular disease. Students should review their ocular disease notes including glaucoma and retinal vascular diseases.
Students are expected to manage their patients and conduct all necessary testing to properly treat their patients. Clinicians will oversee patient care and confirm findings/diagnoses/charting at the end of the examination.
Clinic hours are 8am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday. Students are expected to be in clinic by 7:45am and to perform as clinicians- not as technicians.
Weekly lectures, grand rounds and procedure labs are held Tuesday afternoons. Students are responsible for one short presentation (~15 minutes) during their rotation.

Student Review
" I was a little apprehensive about working with so many different doctors on a daily basis but every single one of them was very friendly, knowledgeable and provided a different array of practice management styles depending on the patient. It also exposed me to multiple patient interaction styles depending on the doctor and patient relationship and allowed me to gain confidence to handle any situation thrown my way. Dr. Ferri was wonderful to work with! He was very personable while also maintaining his professionalism. He provided a variety of insight on how to handle each individual patient depending on their demeanor and presenting symptoms that was very helpful to learn from. Dr. Thomann was amazing to work with. She is the head of the optometry department at this site and has spent many years working for the VA. This has allowed her to interact with many of the patients that the students see, allowing for a first glance complicated looking case to be easily explained and helpful advice given on how to approach the patient."
