Description

PLEASE NOTE: THIS SITE HAS TWO SLOTS:

1) Hospital Based Survey of Optometric Subspecialties

2) Hospital Based Pediatric Optometry

This will be clearly delineated on the selection sign up.

1. Hospital Based Survey of Optometric Subspecialties (one student/quarter):

This externship provides exposure to adult primary care, hospital-based pediatrics, low vision, specialty contact lenses, hospital consults, and surgical observations. The student rotates with different providers between 3 separate clinics all on the University of Minnesota medical campus.

2. Hospital Based Pediatric Optometry (one student/quarter):

This externship is in a hospital-based pediatric clinic. The student will work with two attending optometrists seeing patients in a clinical setting for 80% of their rotation. The remaining 20% of the rotation, there will be the opportunity to rotate with the pediatric ophthalmologists as well as the other optometry and ophthalmology clinics.

This rotation allows the student to work in 4 different clinics within the department of ophthalmology and visual neurosciences, with a different attending for each. At the end of the rotation, the student is required to write a case report abstract about an interesting patient seen.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Specialty Contact Lens Fitting

  2. Pediatric Exam and Management

Student Review

"My expectations were definitely met for this site! I wanted to work mostly on treatment and management. All of the preceptors I worked with would include me in the discussion for patient plans, which made it more of a learning experience. The clinics were all efficiently ran by the technicians, doctors and staff and definitely helped me become more efficient throughout the quarter. I really enjoyed this site because you had the opportunity to rotate through a different speciality each day (primary care, contact lens, pediatrics, TBI/low vision) with a different preceptor. I feel I learned a lot from each preceptor and all of them were great to work with! They were all very approachable and I never felt uncomfortable asking questions since you mainly work one-on-one with the doctors. I was able to observe cataract surgeries and an in-office oculoplastic procedure. I feel I am a more well-rounded optometry student after this rotation."
