Description
Outpatient eye clinic of department of ophthalmology at an academic medical center/teaching hospital. Optometry service provides primary care and surgical co-management alongside ophthalmologists. The core mission is to train ophthalmology residents and optometry residents together and demonstrate a successful academic practice in hospital-based optometry.
Objectives:
1. Demonstrate the integrative role of optometrist in hospital setting alongside ophthalmologists.
2. Demonstrate effective communication with patient education and again practical experience managing referral with other healthcare professionals in a wide variety of clinical conditions and medical scenarios.
3. Demonstrate pragmatic approach to clinical care and patient management in comprehensive healthcare system (i.e. use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to diagnose and deliver eye care).

Hospital orientation and credentialing process prior to starting. Expectations and deatils for on-boarding will be sent separately.

Miscellaneous comments:
3 full days with different optometrist attendings, 1 full day with ophthalmology specialists, 1 half-day in consult/urgent care service with optometry/ophthalmology resident, and 1 half-day admin/didactic time for self-study, journal club, lectures.

-opportunities to see inter-professional referrals and systemic co-management of ocular cases
-high level of complexity and percentage of ocular disease at medical practice
-depending on ophthalmologist’s preferences and clinic flow, student extern may conduct eye exams and present to attending (not just observation) in subspecialities of glaucoma, retina, oculoplastics, cornea.
Externs will have daily interactions with UChicago Medicine ophthalmology residents and attendings. There are researchers and Pritzker School of Medicine students that frequently rotate though the department as well.
