EXTERNSHIP PRECEPTOR OF THE YEAR 2017-18 AND 2019-20 - DR. DAN McGEHEE

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Learn to diagnose, manage and co-manage complex cases.

  2. Learn to efficiently transfer didactic knowledge to clinical patient encounters.

  3. Learn to effectively communicate with patients, with emphasis on chairside demeanor.

It is imperative that students coming to this rotation arrive with a desire to learn at a fast pace and push themselves to convert their didactic knowledge to the clinical setting. Being verbally quizzed frequently is a normal part of the externs day – so do not select this site if this is undesirable for you. Homework assignments are a daily activity, particularly early in the rotation.  You will work with optometry and ophthalmology, which includes observing LASIK, extra-ocular and intra-ocular surgeries.

Students are not allowed to have their cell phones in the exam room – inappropriate use of technologies (cell phone/laptops/tablets) will result in a failing grade in Professionalism.

Student Review

"Fantastic site, especially for spring quarter. By the end of your rotation you'll have vastly increased your confidence in patient care and will feel ready to go for after graduation. I felt that this site was best in preparing me for patient education and post-op care. In total, there are 7 doctors and being able to follow/work with each of them gave me a different outlook on patient care that I greatly appreciated. The constant quizzing and checking of knowledge and understanding was also helpful in making sure I was still on top of my game. Overall, great site with great staff who made me feel welcome. Learned a ton and would choose this site over and over again. Recommend highly!"
