Description

The Rosenbloom Center is a high-volume, high-complexity clinic with a special focus on patients over the age of 65 and patients with diabetes.  The Rosenbloom Center also manages the peri-operative care for the majority of patients having cataract surgery. During this clinical rotation, clinicians will learn additional communication, clinical, and patient management skills needed to provide comprehensive care and refine their knowledge of ocular pathology.  This encompasses care for a majority of geriatric patients but is not exclusive to this patient population. This clinic aims to take care of patients with complex diseases in a private practice-type setting. This externship will help you to become a more proficient, problem-focused clinician. You may not see every patient from start to finish, but please take every opportunity to learn from your performance or through observation.  Our primary goals are EFFICIENT, THOROUGH, PROBLEM-FOCUSED EXAMS while providing great customer service and excellent care.  We encourage you to read about conditions you may encounter in the clinic if you feel deficient in knowledge.  You can access journals through the library website, Google Scholar, PUBMED, and the library to name a few.  We may also give you journal articles to read throughout the quarter and of course discuss conditions throughout the quarter when time permits.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. To prepare externs to be proactive clinicians to better prepare them for their clinical career. This includes:

  • Taking thorough case histories, ocular and medical histories to guide the exam; ordering and interpreting appropriate testing

  • Ordering ancillary testing when indicated, and interpreting results c. Preparing differentials and presenting a case appropriately to attendings with possible treatment and follow-up options d. Preparing appropriate assessments and plans and complete charts in a timely manner e. Helping attendings with the discharge of patients by scribing, preparing medications and educational material, ordering appropriate testing, arranging appointments/referrals, and checking patients out.

2.  To encourage externs to use published works and studies to practice evidence-based case management. It is expected for externs to be familiar with the major studies which have impacted patient care (i.e. ETDRS, OHTS, HEDS, etc.)

Student Review

"This externship site met all my goals and went beyond that. I became significantly more confident as a clinician in diagnosing a wide variety of conditions. The attending doctors were all great to work with. Each one of them was happy to answer any questions you may have had, and frequently employed journal articles to help us better understand certain conditions. Overall, this rotation was a great experience to improve my clinical skills as well as become better in independently ordering appropriate diagnostic testing."
