We practice full-scope optometry in a private group practice setting. Our specialty areas include pediatrics and orthoptic vision therapy, ocular disease, specialty contact lenses, low vision, and perioperative co-management. We rely heavily on evidence-based principles and specialty testing to provide our patients with the highest standard of care.

Learning Objectives

The primary aim of this rotation is to gain proficiency in the examination and evidence-based management of pediatric patients in a private practice setting. Special importance will be placed on retinoscopy, assessment of eye alignment, and exam modifications that enable efficient interaction with children.

Secondary objectives include the following:

1. Gain proficiency in the management of common pediatric eye conditions, including, amblyopia, accommodative esotropia, intermittent exotropia, convergence insufficiency, and degenerative myopia.

2. Work toward familiarity with instrument-based diagnosis and management of less common eye conditions that are often first identified in childhood, such as superior oblique palsy, optic disc drusen, ocular albinism, and optic nerve hypoplasia.

3. Develop monitoring protocols for pediatric systemic disorders that affect the eyes.

4. Develop strategies for effective interdisciplinary care coordination with pediatricians and other pediatric subspecialists.

5. Develop a reliance on evidence-based practice as the foundation for child and parent advocacy.

The student will engage in independent scholarly activity intended to achieve the above objectives, which will be guided by weekly discussion with the preceptor. The student will also participate in grand rounds-style presentations with other student externs and providers, as well as prepare one conference-quality poster per rotation.
