Description
The Northport VAMC Eye Clinic provides primary care, vision therapy, ocular disease, vision rehabilitation, and low vision services to the veteran population. We have 4 full-time and 11 part-time doctors, 1 technician, and 1 optician on staff. We offer pragmatic experience in a hospital setting and are equipped with up-to-date ophthalmic technology.
Students are expected to:
1) Perform comprehensive and problem-oriented examinations with active and independent clinical thinking; not basic data collection.
2) Understand and apply therapeutic management of glaucoma, anterior and posterior segment disease; be able to screen and test for binocularity and accommodative disorders.
3) Participate in our morning lecture series; prepare at least two 20-minute presentations

Arrival procedure for students:
Orientation is 4 hours long, on the morning of the first day. All students receive an orientation packet.

Miscellaneous comments:
Students are expected to a total of 6-10 per day. They are required to check-in their patient with an attending and independently conduct a thorough exam, including retinal evaluation. Each patient is then checked by an attending.
Housing:
We offer an on-campus housing at no charge, with a $50 refundable cash deposit. More details to follow in welcome email.
Interprofessional Education (IPE) or Collaborative Practice:
As part of the morning seminar series, students are required to attend in-service lectures when clinicians from other services come to lecture. Specialties are in-service lectures with neuro, derm, radiology, and PT.
