Lakewood will be an excellent site for students due to the variety of patient demographics and conditions that they will be exposed to. The ODS at this site are very engaged in practice to the full extent of their licensure. Students will be exposed to advanced procedures, ocular pathology, specialty contact lenses as well as plenty of routine exams. The ODS are young, energetic, and share a passion for teaching and advancing the profession.
Objectives:
1. Managing complex ocular disease and understanding when to refer.
2. How to perform an efficient problem-oriented exam while providing excellent patient care.
3. How to collaborate with MD's and use tertiary care experts as a resource.
4. Billing and coding.
5. Business aspects of running an independent optometry clinic.
6. How to interact with staff and the importance of that relationship.

Miscellaneous comments:
This is a busy office with a healthy mix of routine eye exams and extremely medical eye exams we see a good amount of glaucoma and AMD. We also see a lot of dry eyes as well as pre and post op for both LASIK and cataract surgery. All three staff doctors fit specialty contact lenses, RGPs, sclerals, and hybrids. We see all ages; I've had days where I've had ages from 3 to 98 on my schedule. This is a very established practice, and we have a loyal patient base.
Students are encouraged to attend follow up visits for patients referred for secondary and tertiary care. The ODs are involved in the co-management process.
The technician will complete a workup and then present to the student. The student then completes a full exam or a problem-oriented exam for OV and then presents to the attending OD for discussion and treatment plans.
