Description

Provide comprehensive eye care to America's Veterans. We have 3 (soon to be 4) full-time ODs, 3 Residents that rotate between the Lake Nona VA Hospital and our clinic, and 5 technicians. We have VF, OCT (Cirrus/Spectralis), Ocular Response Analyzer, Fundus camera, and A/B scan, in addition to fully equipped exam rooms. We also have dedicated exam rooms for students. The medical center offers primary care and multiple specialties. In the Fall of 2021, cataract surgery and minor procedures will begin at Lake Baldwin. Our clinic has had a consistent student extern program for over 15 years. We place a high value on educating our students and giving them the best experience possible. At our site, they will see a lot of ocular disease (glaucoma, AMD, dm retinopathy, cataracts, vascular occlusions, corneal abrasions, foreign bodies, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, etc). In addition to re-examining the patient, it is expected that the attending will discuss each patient with the student, review any special testing completed and answer any questions the student may have.

Every Thursday afternoon is dedicated to conference time with the students and residents. During the rotation, each student is assigned one journal article to discuss and one case presentation. Conference activities include student/resident journal discussion, student/resident case presentations, occasional slide quiz given to students by the residents, and a staff lecture.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Become more knowledgeable and confident in handling complex ocular disease cases.

2. Develop excellent clinical and interpersonal skills.

3. Encourage a passion for life-long learning.

Arrival procedure for students:

The first phase is doing a formal orientation to the VA and Eye Clinic, completed by the extern coordinator. The second phase is having the students observe the OD during patient care. The third phase is allowing the students to see a patient but check in with the attending prior to the attending. These phases last 1-2 days each. The fourth phase is allowing the student to complete the exam from start to finish and then check in with the attending.
