Description
Kraff Eye Institute is a LASIK ophthalmology practice that focuses on LASIK and PRK procedures, but we also do routine primary care, post-op cataract management, ocular disease management of diabetes/glaucoma/Plaquenil screening, and specialty contact lenses. On occasion, we have referrals for pterygium removals. 3-4 days will be with Dr. Huynh (primary care, ocular disease, emergency visits, basic and specialty CLs, post-op cataracts) 1 day will be with Dr. Wickware (primary care, specialty CLs, post-op cataracts) 1 day of post-op LASIK/PRK with MD
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Become familiar and expand knowledge of private practice flow and medical management of ocular disease cases, specialty contact lenses for keratoconus and post-transplant corneas, and soft presbyopic contact lens fitting
2. Become familiar with post-op management for cataracts and refractive surgery patients when working with a MD surgeon
3. To develop confidence and improve exam efficiency to see more patients in preparation for private practice after graduation

Arrival procedure for students:
First 2-3 days the student will observe the flow of the clinic and will shadow/scribe with the doctor. Student will begin training on pre-charting, becoming familiar with EMR system prior to seeing patients.
Attending Staff - Full Time:
Christopher Pereira, OD (Primary Care, Ocular Disease)
Elizabeth Wickware, OD (Primary Care, Contact Lens, Ocular Disease)
Colman Kraff, MD (Ocular Disease)
Willima Lissner, MD (Ocular Disease)
Attending Staff - Part Time:
Cheryl Kraff Cooper, MD (Ocular Disease)
Miscellaneous comments:
- Students will initially see more patients with the ODs for routine care to become familiar with the EMR system. Students will need to observe post-op cataract and LASIK/PRK procedures prior to independently working up post-op patients for the MD.
- Students will learn and be responsible for performing all diagnostic testing (e.g. OCT, corneal topography, Lipiscan) except for HVF, for all of the patients they are seeing.
- ODs will try to coordinate 1-2 brief lunch and learn with the contact lens reps to give a quick education about their products and to understand the role of the reps to private practices
