Description

Two optometrist VA clinic with 2 techs and an optical. recently updated equipment includes an OPTOS, Icare tonometer, Wave Analyzer Medica, and HVF and OCT. There is opportunity for shadowing ophthalmologists (retina, glaucoma, pediatrics) as well as surgery depending on availability and student interest.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1) Increase the student's confidence, experience, and skill level with regard to taking effective histories, refracting patients, dispensing and adjusting glasses, performing gonioscopy, examining patients, taking good notes, and charting effectively and efficiently.

2) Familiarizing the student with ordering, performing, and interpreting the results of special testing including OCT, OPTOS, HVF, and WAM 700.

3) Increase the student's comfort level and experience with examining patients with ocular disease, diagnosing ocular disease, discussing ocular conditions with patients, answering patient questions, addressing patient concerns, and ordering appropriate testing, follow up, referrals and consults.

Arrival procedure for students:

We will contact each student 90 days before the start of their rotation in order to help them complete all the forms and fingerprinting they will need to have to work at a VA clinic.

We will have journal club/case discussion for 1 hour every week. The student will do one power point presentation on an eye disease of their choice during their rotation with us.
