Description
Our practice is over 50% ocular disease (glaucoma, AMD) that also needs an eye exam. We do a lot of urgent care for the community, and our PCP and ER doctors. We do a significant amount of dry eyes, and partner with our MD colleagues in LaCrosse for coordinated care including amniotic membranes, TBI follow-ups, etc. A general ophthalmologist comes in every other week. We have a journal club with the ocular disease and neuro-rehabilitation residents each month. The student has a dedicated exam room and desk area for charting. There is a large, fully equipped break room.

White lab coat if wearing scrubs with name badge, otherwise clinic attire. Bring any desired clinical books or equipment.

Arrival procedure for students:
Dr. Nahas will immediately contact the students with an introductory email giving them key information that they will need to know before beginning the rotation. He will then contact the students again 2 weeks before their arrival. Students will be expected to meet at their primary clinic location at 7:45am on the first day of their externship.
The Gundersen Lutheran Eye Clinic-Viroqua is located in the main medical building attached to the Hospital at 407 South Main Street Viroqua, WI 54665. Enter through main doors. The Eye clinic is on the left after the pharmacy. Students should inform the front desk staff who they are, and they will be met by Dr. Nahas.

"I will say by far out of all my site this was my favorite - these preceptors love to teach. You are allowed to go at your own pace within reason, you can pick and choose the case that suit your interest, and the techs/doctors are available if you need help. I can't count how many times I had the attending doctors ask me what I want to do or what did I think or how many time they pulled me out of a room to show me something different or rare - I learned alot but also felt like a true colleague. I saw a lot of cataract post opt at this site as well as a significant amount of urgent walk ins that range from foreign bodies to uveitis and I had my first CRAO and new diagnosed retinal detachment. They give you the option to see surgery if you're interested in LaCrosse - was able to watch my retinal detachment patient's surgery the following day. Also Gundersen holds CE meeting and events that you are welcome to attend. This site is true what you want to make it and the staff is amazing!! "
