Description

Note: Students will rotate to satellite clinics in Mequon, New Berlin, Oak Creek and Mount Pleasant depending on preceptor availabilities.

The Froedtert and MCW Eye Institute is an academic ophthalmology clinic, and part of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center. With over 40 ophthalmic practitioners in every eye specialty including optometry, it is a major research and clinical facility in southeastern Wisconsin, with over 70,000 patient encounters each year. The average annual patient contacts for attending optometrists is over 5,000 patient exams. In addition, the Eye Institute is a teaching facility for 17 ophthalmology residents and four fellows. There will be observation of surgical activities, and participation in ED triage.

To be successful in this rotation, the student must have a strong basic skill set, be self motivated, be willing to independently review publications and participate in conferences with ophthalmology residents, medical students and ophthalmic technicians and be efficient to keep up in this fast paced clinic.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Develop optometric practice skills in multiple areas of study, including ocular disease, specialty contact lenses and pediatrics.

  2. Learn cooperative practice model between optometry and ophthalmology.

  3. Strengthen knowledge base through literature review and conferences, both independently and with preceptors.

Student Review

"My expectations were BEYOND met. I was crushed to leave. If there was a chance I could of done my entire year or even another quarter here I would of in a heartbeat. You see such a vast variety and have as much independence as you feel comfortable with. I really will miss my time here. Students that would benefit here would be someone that is highly self-motivated, ready to put in extra effort, outgoing, students interested in disease and have hopes of potentially doing a residency.
