Medical Optometry Practice
This is a medical optometry practice that primarily manages patients with diabetes and glaucoma. Approximately 99% of patients are referred by other healthcare providers, while 1% are seen for comprehensive eye examinations. The ability to speak Punjabi is considered an asset but is not required. During each student's rotation, they will gain exposure to a Glaucoma Specialist (in office), a Uveitis Specialist (in office), a Retina Specialist (Operating Room), and Cataract surgery (Operating Room).
Learning Objectives
Develop strong skills in the recognition, treatment, and management of ocular disease by the end of the clinical placement.
Become proficient at identifying clinical cues from various diagnostic assessments, including case history, refraction, and slit lamp examination.
Become comfortable collaborating with other healthcare professionals and providing holistic, patient-centered care.

Arrival procedure for students:
For the first two days, the student will shadow Dr. Mohan. For the remainder of the clinical placement, the student will be supervised by Dr. Mohan in the exam room.

Miscellaneous comments:
Students will gain exposure to urgent and emergent eye care, participating in the evaluation and management of acute patient presentations under appropriate supervision. They will receive dedicated training on the protocols and clinical decision-making involved in managing emergent ocular conditions. In addition to hands-on clinical experience, Dr. Mohan will provide practical mentorship on topics essential for a successful career in optometry, including practice ownership, as well as BC billing and coding. Students may also have the opportunity to shadow and work alongside ophthalmologists in a variety of subspecialties—including glaucoma, retina, cataract, and pediatric ophthalmology, with additional specialties available based on student interests. These Friday shadowing experiences in Surrey (schedule permitting) are designed to broaden students' understanding of collaborative eye care and expose them to diverse clinical settings.
