Student Review
"I cannot stress what an incredible experience I had at Duane Waters--do not let the fact that it's a prison deter you from coming here! Every prisoner I worked with was nothing but respectful; they appreciate the fact that you're there to help them. I got to see some of the coolest ocular conditions--a subluxated lens, retinitis pigmentosa, pterygium, Thygeson's SPK, histoplasmosis, AMD, HSV keratitis, plus tons of trauma and glaucoma. I also got to fit several prosthetic eyes, which we really don't get the opportunity to do firsthand at the IEI. You have complete autonomy at Duane Waters--they allow you perform the entire exam (including dilation) without the attending stepping in the room at all unless you ask them to. I truly believe that if you go into this rotation with a positive attitude (as you should for every rotation), everyone would gain a tremendous learning experience from this site."
