Description
NOTE: Student must have proof of health/hospitalization insurance.
Our clinic is part of a multi-disciplinary building connected to the Children’s Hospital. We have 7 exam rooms, 2 specialty testing rooms, 3 offices, a break room and an optical area. The ophthalmology department sees many JIA and diabetic patients. Games and laughter and fun are a part of our day in the midst of some challenging moments. We pride ourselves on presenting eye exams in a positive light.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Increase knowledge of pediatric vision care. The easiest way to be more comfortable with providing pediatric vision care is involvement and knowledge. This rotation would allow the optometric extern to be involved with pediatric eye exams from the beginning to the end, including but not limited to prism measurements for strabismus, all pretesting, diagnostic testing, specialty pediatric contact lens fits and the management of a variety of eye conditions.
2. Exposure to a variety of health care fields which are integrated with pediatric vision care, including but not limited to oncology, hematology, endocrinology, rheumatology, physical and occupational therapies and neurology.
3. Ability to have a variety of experiences in the pediatric vision care world: attend Grand Rounds lectures at University of Nebraska Medical Center, monthly journal club with the pediatric ophthalmology fellows, observe a variety of pediatric eye surgeries, and produce one informal case report for staff on a pediatric case report. There is also the opportunity to participate in pediatric research with Dr. Suh if they are interested.

Student Review
"My expectations were greatly exceeded at Children's. I feel like I learned something new every single day. I saw pseudopapilledema, gyrate atrophy, commotio retinae, JIA, sarcoid, and so many other genetic and systemic conditions. I was able to participate in UNMC's journal club and ophthalmology grand rounds, along with a journal club organized by Children's. I had the opportunity to observe surgeries with the OMDs, and I was able to observe some VT at an outside practice. The OMDs, ODs, opticians, and staff were all incredibly kind and knowledgeable, and I learned from all of them. I wish I could have spent the entire year here!"
