Description
Welcome to the Aleda E. Lutz VAMC in Saginaw, MI! Our eye clinic mission is to provide adult primary eye care, disease management, and eye care triage for mid and northern Michigan Veterans. In addition, we offer moderate-intensity low vision services with a team of blind rehabilitation specialists. We also closely collaborate with primary care, urgent care, and available specialties when ocular manifestations of systemic disease presents. Externs collaborate with five full-time staff optometrists, externs from the Michigan College of Optometry, and a great team of technicians to provide clinical services with Monday through Friday availability. Externs will be expected to initiate and complete comprehensive, dilated eye exams while using an extensive medical record, including, but not limited to, medications, progress notes, labs, and imaging. Externs are issued a VA laptop for mobility throughout the clinic. In November of 2021, we will be moving to a newly constructed clinical building approximately 2 miles away from our current main campus. This building will house the Optometry clinic, Blind Rehabilitation Services, and Audiology clinics. This state of the art facility will provide easy locational accessibility for our care team and also allow for customized appointment coordination for dual sensory impairment Veterans. We are excited to offer our externs a strong clinical experience with an emphasis on developing skills in differential diagnosis, problem-oriented critical thinking, and clinical management strategies. Come join our team!

Student Review
"Amazing! The doctors give you the independence to diagnose and manage patients on your own with guidance. They do not judge you for not knowing an answer only encourage you to figure it out and learn from the experience. All of the attending doctors are fun, helpful and outstanding mentors. I am very pleased with my educational experience. Each patient encounter was different and beneficial. Not only was I able to solidify my knowledge of disease but practice management strategies as well. I would recommend this site to anyone!"
